This is where the curriculum meets its horizon. The Ring Builders — whatever made the protomolecule — leave behind a network of ring gates: stable shortcuts joining distant regions of space through a shared hub. To ask how real any of that is, we separate three things: extra spatial dimensions, traversable wormholes, and the parts that are pure narrative cosmology.
Extra dimensions: serious but unconfirmed
Speculative Our best attempts at a unified physics — string theory and its relatives — posit more spatial dimensions than the three we move in, typically ten or eleven, with the extra ones curled up (compactified) too small to notice. This is mathematically serious work, not idle speculation, and some models (for instance a single warped extra dimension) even predict observable consequences. But no extra dimension has been detected. The framework is speculative in the precise sense: internally coherent, actively studied, not demonstrated. The higher dimensions module includes an interactive that shows how a dimension can be real yet hidden at everyday scales.
Traversable wormholes and the price of a gate
Speculative General relativity permits traversable wormholes as valid solutions — Morris and Thorne wrote down the geometry in 1988. A ring gate is essentially a stabilised, engineered wormhole mouth. The catch is the fuel: keeping the throat open requires exotic matter with negative energy density, to hold gravity's tendency to pinch the tunnel shut.
Established Negative energy density is not fantasy in principle. The Casimir effect — two conducting plates a hair apart, pushed together by the quantum vacuum — produces a genuinely negative energy density in a tiny region, and has been measured. That much is established.
Handwave What is not available is negative energy in the quantity, stability, and configuration a macroscopic, durable gate would need. The gap between the femtojoule-scale Casimir effect and a gate a spacecraft flies through is not an engineering margin; it is many orders of magnitude with no known bridge. So a traversable wormhole is speculative; a permanent ring-gate network you can route traffic through is handwave.
The ring gates and the hub
Handwave The ring gates go further than a single shortcut. They form a network: every gate opens onto a common slow-zone hub, from which any other gate can be reached — a switchboard for interstellar travel, engineered and maintained across cosmic time. Even granting traversable wormholes, a stable multi-node network with a shared junction, safe transit, and survival across the death of its builders is not extrapolation from known physics. It is well-constructed narrative cosmology, and the honest label is handwave.
Speculative There is one tantalising thread worth naming, because it is real physics rather than invention. A line of work in theoretical physics — the ER=EPR conjecture — proposes that quantum entanglement (Layer 5) and wormhole geometry may be two descriptions of the same underlying thing, with recent 2026 work still probing how such a link could emerge. If anything ever connected the protomolecule's entanglement-flavoured coordination to its wormhole-building, this is the neighbourhood it would live in. It remains deeply speculative — but it is the rare place where the story's two biggest handwaves gesture at a single real research question.
The part with no analog at all
Handwave The Ring Builders' apparent ability to store minds and infrastructure in a higher-dimensional substrate — and whatever destroyed them by reaching through it — has no real-science analog whatsoever. The series uses it consistently and to great effect, but it should never be mistaken for an extrapolation of physics. The curriculum stops here, on purpose, with the humility the flag demands.
The protomolecule connection
The ring gates stack the curriculum's boldest claims: extra dimensions (speculative), traversable wormholes (speculative), negative energy in principle (established) but not at scale (handwave), a maintained gate network (handwave), and mind-storage in higher dimensions (pure handwave). The one live research thread — ER=EPR — is where entanglement and wormholes might genuinely meet, and it is the most interesting door the whole programme leaves ajar.
