What would it actually take?

Feasibility studies take a speculative or science-fictional concept seriously enough to specify what would actually be required to build it. The exercise is clarifying: it forces a precise distinction between engineering challenges, frontier research, and genuine scientific gaps that would require breakthroughs not currently on the horizon.
