1 · Concept overview
Electrogravitics is the mid-century claim that a strong electric field can be made to act on gravity — that an asymmetric high-voltage capacitor can push against spacetime rather than against air. The physics of that claim is settled and belongs to another brief. This one is about the episode: who spent money, on what, between roughly 1948 and 1970; when and why the spending stopped; and how a well-documented, entirely public funding story was later re-narrated as a suppressed technology.
The framing under test is the one in general circulation: a suppressed or abandoned line of antigravity research was once taken seriously by industry. The second half is true, and better documented than almost anyone in the argument realises. The first half is false, and fails on the evidence its own proponents rely on. The interesting content is the mechanism by which the second half was converted into the first — a five-step conversion that can be laid out step by step, with named authors and dates for each step.
The physics verdict is owned by Electrogravitics and is not re-argued here: no electric–gravity coupling exists, the Biefeld–Brown effect is electrohydrodynamic ion wind, it essentially disappears in vacuum, and MIT flew a real solid-state electroaerodynamic aircraft in 2018. One physics datum crosses the boundary only because it is a fact about funding rather than about nature: the United States government paid to test Brown’s device, twice, and published the null result both times.
The single fact this brief is organised around: in 1958 the Winston-Salem industrialist Agnew Bahnson was simultaneously the largest private patron of the Institute of Field Physics at Chapel Hill — which convened the conference that became GR1 and later hosted Peter Higgs — and the employer of Thomas Townsend Brown on the “Whitehall Rand” antigravity project at his own company. One patron, two programmes, one of them real physics and one of them not. Nothing about either was hidden.
2 · Current scientific position
Established The money was real, it was large for its era, and every donor is named in the archival record. The best source is not the fringe literature but a peer-reviewed history of science: Kaiser and Rickles, The Price of Gravity, in Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences 48(3), 2018. It documents a genuine private-patronage surge into gravitation in the 1950s United States and shows what the money actually bought. Established The patrons wanted gravity control. The physicists spent the money on general relativity. Real programme, wrong premise, real payoff — just not the payoff the patrons had in mind.
Established It starts with an essay competition and a drowning. Roger Babson founded the Gravity Research Foundation in 1948 after his sister drowned; he wrote that she “was unable to fight gravity, which came up and seized her like a dragon and brought her to the bottom.” The instrument was a prize essay competition, and its founding premise was explicitly gravity shielding — Babson sought “the best two thousand word essays on the possibilities of discovering some partial insulator, reflector or absorber of gravity waves.” Established In its first decade the foundation distributed “an average of nearly $2,000 each year in prize money,” first prize $1,000 — which Kaiser and Rickles note was “about equal to a graduate student’s annual stipend at the time.” By the late 1950s it was making gifts of $12,000 in stocks to universities, “together worth about $140,000 in 2018 dollars.” Correspondence rose from about 25 letters a week in the first year to more than a hundred times that by 1958, and attendance at its conferences went from 22 people in 1951 to 280 in 1958 under president George M. Rideout.
Established The winners promptly ignored the premise, and were paid anyway. Bryce DeWitt took first prize in 1953 with an essay dismissing gravity shielding outright, and called it “the quickest $1000 I ever earned,” written in one evening. Arnowitt and Deser won in 1954; Belinfante in 1956. The foundation subsequently “turned away from trying to block gravity and began trying to understand it,” and its essay prize has since gone to Hawking (1971), Penrose (1975) and Smoot (1993), with at least six eventual physics Nobel laureates among past winners. The institution founded to shield gravity became a minor but respectable fixture of gravitational physics within a decade, by paying the people who told it that it was wrong.
Established The largest private patron is the one the whole brief turns on. Agnew Bahnson, a Winston-Salem industrialist whose money came from industrial air conditioning, wrote to DeWitt on 30 May 1955 and met him on 9 July 1955. The Institute of Field Physics was incorporated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on 7 September 1955. Within three years Bahnson had raised “almost $90,000 in donations for the Institute — more than $750,000 in 2018 dollars — beyond his own contributions,” from “private donors, major manufacturing corporations, and family foundations.” He died in a plane crash on 3 June 1964, aged 48.
Established Corporate money was real and named, and the executives said out loud what they wanted for it. The Glenn L. Martin Company bought a $5,000 Founder’s Membership in the Institute of Field Physics. Martin’s vice-president G. S. Trimble wrote to DeWitt in June 1955 that as “a dynamic industry we can provide the motivation for advances that can be obtained in no other way,” and that “sooner or later man will invade space… At least one category of the things one must study… is the laws of nature surrounding the force of gravity.” Attendees at Bahnson’s June 1956 fundraising gathering at Roaring Gap, North Carolina included Glenn L. Martin, the American Machine and Foundry Company, and IBM. Martin’s Research Institute for Advanced Studies hired Louis Witten — father of Edward Witten — as its first researcher, and he attended the 1957 Chapel Hill conference. Frontier This is the load-bearing ambiguity of the whole episode: an aerospace vice-president stating a corporate interest in gravity is a documented fact, and it is not the same fact as a gravity-control programme existing inside his company.
Established The Air Force funded it too, through a named officer at a named laboratory, and funded the right thing. Joshua Goldberg, stationed at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB, ran general relativity funding through the laboratory’s “modern physics research branch.” The Air Force granted $5,000 to the January 1957 Chapel Hill conference and supplied Military Air Transport Service flights that eventually carried physicists from eleven nations; IBM donated free machine time. Established The output is the part that matters and is routinely left out of the story. The January 1957 Chapel Hill conference — 45 physicists from 11 nations — became GR1, the first of the international general relativity conference series, and is credited with doing for general relativity “what Shelter Island did for quantum electrodynamics.” The Institute went on to host Peter Higgs (1965), Heinz Pagels, Ryoyu Utiyama and Felix Pirani; the International Society for General Relativity and Gravitation counted more than 220 members by 1974. A field that had been a backwater for thirty years became a discipline, and a measurable share of the seed money came from people who thought they were buying antigravity.
Established Now the anti-suppression evidence, which is the reason the framing collapses. Suppression leaves silence. This episode left a paper trail of denunciations, written by the most senior physicists alive at the time, in public and in advance. John Wheeler drafted a protection clause to be attached “to each and every statement from the new institute,” reading in part that the work at Chapel Hill “has no connection with so-called ‘anti-gravity research’ of whatever kind.” He told university administrators: “Such ideas are not merely fantasies; they are ruled out by everything we know today.” Established Bahnson himself wrote in November 1955 promotional material that “in the minds of the public the subject of gravity is often associated with fantastic possibilities,” and that “from the standpoint of the institute no specific practical results of the studies can be foreseen at this time.” Established Robert Oppenheimer was troubled that Deser and Arnowitt had taken Babson money, writing that he “should charitably characterize as a hoax” the prize-winning essay, and noting that the acceptance “has bothered me, though many colleagues regard it as a good joke.” Established Martin Gardner called the Gravity Research Foundation “perhaps the most useless scientific project of the twentieth century.” Established And Robert Millikan told Brown directly that his ideas were impossible. Four separate refusals, all in writing, all before any alleged classification.
Frontier The documents at the centre of the myth are two commercial trade reports, and their sourcing is the whole story. Electrogravitics Systems: An examination of electrostatic motion, dynamic counterbary and barycentric control, report GRG-013/56, February 1956, issued by the Gravity Research Group, Special Weapons Study Unit, Aviation Studies (International) Limited, London; and The Gravitics Situation, December 1956, from Gravity Rand Ltd. Established Aviation Studies was a real trade outfit rather than a hoax — its principal, Richard Worcester, was a working aviation-policy author whose Roots of British Air Policy was reviewed in The Aeronautical Journal. That matters in the unhelpful direction: commercial intelligence sold to industry subscribers is the genre most likely to over-promise and least likely to be independently checked.
Frontier What the February 1956 report asserted, by company. Glenn Martin: gravity control “could be achieved in six years.” Convair: “extensively committed,” multiple rigs. Bell: an experimental rig intended to “cancel out gravity.” Lear Inc.: a gravity research division established. Sperry-Rand: gravity work underway. General Electric: electronic gravity-adjustment devices. Sikorsky: gravity “tangible and formidable.” Douglas: counterbary on the work agenda. Hiller: new flying-platform forms. Clarke Electronics: an operational rig. Curtiss-Wright, Lockheed, Boeing and North American: “in various stages of study.” The academic bodies it named were MIT, the Gravity Research Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study, Caltech, Princeton and the University of North Carolina. Established Those are the same institutions Kaiser and Rickles show were doing ordinary general relativity. The report also asserted that “Townsend Brown in electrogravitics is the equivalent of Frank Whittle in gas turbines.”
Handwave The report cites no named interviews, and it pre-installs its own unfalsifiability clause. Its own language for the company claims is that “most of industry’s leaders have made some reference to it” and that firms are “known to be in various stages of study.” It then rationalises the absence of evidence in advance: “the basic research and technology behind electro-anti-gravitation is so much in its infancy that this is perhaps one field of development where not only the methods but the ideas are secret.” Handwave That sentence is the seed of the entire suppression thesis, and it was planted by the primary document itself in February 1956, before any secrecy is alleged to have occurred. The absence of evidence is written into the claim as a feature.
Established The mainstream press wave was real and its date is not settled. Kaiser and Rickles confirm that the New York Herald-Tribune “ran a front-page story, trumpeting, ‘Conquest of gravity aim of top scientists in U.S.’” The three-part series is attributed to aviation correspondent Ansel E. Talbert and named Martin, Bell, Convair, Lear, Sikorsky, Sperry-Rand, General Dynamics and Avro Canada, with Lawrence D. Bell, William P. Lear, Igor Sikorsky and the frozen-food magnate Clarence Birdseye among its named figures. Frontier Two sources fetched for this brief disagree on the date — 20–22 November 1955 in the fringe literature and in the run-up to the Institute’s late-1955 publicity, against 20–22 November 1956 in defence journalism — and this brief therefore prints no date. The existence and content of the series are established; the year is not, and rounding it to one value would be inventing a fact this pass does not have.
Handwave And one founding citation of the suppression literature could not be traced at all. The Interavia article — usually given as “Towards Flight Without Stress or Strain… or Weight,” Interavia vol. 11 no. 5 (1956), pp. 373–374, often under the byline “Intel” — appears in dozens of downstream works and could not be verified in this pass. It was not in the anthology text that was fetched, and it appears only in fringe compilations and reference lists. That is a finding, not a gap. A citation that has been passed hand to hand for seventy years without anyone in the chain evidently returning to the magazine is direct evidence about how the chain works.
Established The man at the centre, with the fact the suppression literature omits. Thomas Townsend Brown (18 March 1905 – 27 October 1985), born Zanesville, Ohio, to a wealthy construction family; Doane Academy 1922–23; enrolled at Caltech in autumn 1923 and left after his first year; one year at Denison. He held no physics degree. Career: apprentice seaman 1930; Naval Research Laboratory from 16 March 1931; the 1932 Navy–Princeton gravity expedition aboard USS S-48; the 1933 Johnson-Smithsonian Deep Sea Expedition; post lost to Depression budget cuts in 1933; re-enlisted 1937; lieutenant 1938; assigned to the Glenn L. Martin Company as a materiel engineer in 1939; minesweeping work 1940–41; Atlantic Fleet Radar School, Norfolk, May 1942. Frontier He was discharged in October 1942 after requesting to resign “for the good of the naval service to escape trial by General Court Martial.” That is load-bearing and is routinely omitted by a literature that presents him as a decorated insider. Frontier The chronology here rests on an encyclopaedia entry rather than on service records, and the court-martial resignation and the NICAP ejection should be checked against a primary document before either is treated as settled.
Established Then the biography that is the cleanest illustration available of what actually happened. Brown consulted for Lockheed-Vega on radar after 1944 and for the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard in the early 1950s under Admiral Arthur W. Radford’s sponsorship; moved to Cleveland in 1952 trying to sell his “Gravitor” to the military “with little success”; demonstrated in England and France in 1955–56 for SNCASO, work that ended when the company merged; co-founded NICAP in 1956 and was forced out as director in 1957 amid allegations he was using its funds for antigravity research. Established And in 1958 he worked as research and development consultant on Agnew Bahnson’s “Whitehall Rand Project” at the Bahnson Company in Winston-Salem, and founded Rand International Limited, an antigravity corporation, the same year. The same industrialist bankrolled the Institute of Field Physics and Townsend Brown’s antigravity bench work at the same time. Frontier Project Winterhaven (1952) summarised Brown’s work and proposed a saucer “as the basis of a possible interceptor with Mach 3 capability,” with “the first disc… complete before 1960.” The 1956 trade report itself records the outcome in five words: the proposals “were not accepted.”
Established The government tested the device and published the null result twice. Robert Talley of Veritay Technology, under Air Force contract in the late 1980s, tested asymmetric capacitors in high vacuum and reported that “under high vacuum conditions… no detectable propulsive force was electrostatically induced.” NASA’s own 2004 replication — Canning, Melcher and Winet, NASA/CR-2004-213312 — found that “no device showed signs of rotation at a pressure less than 300 Torr” and concluded that the thrust “was due to electrostatic forces on the leakage current.” Established Suppression predicts no such tests, or classified ones. Both are in the open literature with report numbers.
Frontier There is no single termination event, and the absence of one is the point. Three mechanisms, all public. Established First, the premise failed on contact with physicists — Wheeler’s clause, Oppenheimer’s disgust, Millikan’s refusal and DeWitt’s prize-winning dismissal all pre-date any alleged classification, and the 1956 report’s own showcase project had already been rejected in 1952. Established Second, the patrons got what they were in fact paying for — by the mid-1960s general relativity was a self-supporting field with federal funding, a professional society and an international conference series, and Bahnson’s death in June 1964 removed the largest private antigravity-adjacent patron. There was nothing left to suppress because the money had migrated to a discipline that was working. Frontier Third, a statutory change closed the residual military basic-research channel: formal gravity-related research at Wright-Patterson is reported to have wound down in the early 1970s following the Mansfield Amendments (1970), which restricted “military funding of research that lacked a direct or apparent relationship to a specific military function.” That is carried from defence journalism and has not been checked against the statute text, so it is flagged rather than asserted. Established Note the shape of it either way: a publicly debated Act of Congress, printed in the Congressional Record, is the least secret possible cause of a funding line ending.
3 · Frontier questions
Established The historical questions that are actually open are archival, not physical. Nothing here waits on a measurement; the physics was settled before the money arrived and re-confirmed twice since. What is open is what a set of documents says, and every one of those documents exists somewhere or is known not to.
Frontier Did any aerospace firm ever have a gravity-control programme, in the sense of a budget line, a project number and staff? No corroborating record has been produced in seventy years. The entire company list rests on a February 1956 trade report whose own text says it is relying on what “industry’s leaders have made some reference to.” Speculative The competing hypothesis worth stating in full — it is coherent and nobody has tested it — is that one or more firms ran small exploratory efforts too minor to survive in the corporate record, which would make the trade report directionally right and quantitatively fantastical. Handwave The hypothesis that a large classified programme existed and remains concealed is the one this brief flags hardest, because it is the only one for which the absence of evidence has been converted into support.
Frontier What year did the Talbert series run? Two fetched sources disagree, 1955 against 1956. This is settleable in an afternoon by anyone with access to a New York Herald-Tribune microfilm run or a library catalogue record, and until someone does it the correct behaviour is to print the disagreement rather than a value. Established It is a small question that functions as a large one: it is the cheapest available test of whether the citation chain in this literature has ever been re-walked.
Handwave Does the Interavia article exist as described? It is cited across the entire suppression literature with a volume, an issue, a page range and a byline, and this pass could not find it. Speculative Three readings are live and none has been eliminated: the article exists and is simply not digitised; the article exists with different details and the citation has drifted; or the citation was fabricated or garbled early and copied forward. A single library retrieval discriminates between all three, and the fact that no one in a seventy-year chain appears to have done it is the most informative thing about the chain.
Frontier Is the Mansfield Amendment account right? The claim that the 1970 Mansfield Amendments closed the Wright-Patterson gravity line reaches this brief through defence journalism, not through the statute or through a funding record. Frontier The likely primary route is Joshua Goldberg’s own account of Air Force support for general relativity, published in the Einstein Studies series and not obtained here. Speculative If the amendment account fails, the residual line probably ended for the duller reason that its programme officer moved on and nobody replaced the interest.
Frontier What exactly was Whitehall Rand doing in 1958, and did Bahnson himself see the two programmes as one? This is the highest-value unexamined question in the episode. The Bahnson papers are the obvious location, and a patron’s own correspondence about funding a Nobel-track physics institute and an antigravity bench in the same year would be the closest thing available to a direct measurement of how the two categories looked from inside. Speculative The reading offered here — that Bahnson saw no contradiction, because from a patron’s seat both were bets on the same subject — is an inference from his behaviour, not a documented statement of his belief.
Speculative And one hypothesis about the myth’s durability, offered as a hypothesis. The episode may persist partly because the true account is also strange. “A frozen-foods magnate and an air-conditioning manufacturer funded the renaissance of general relativity, and one of them simultaneously employed a court-martialled Navy lieutenant with no physics degree to build antigravity rigs” is a sentence that sounds less plausible than the conspiracy version and happens to be true. Handwave Nothing in the record tests this; it is a reading of why a correction that is more surprising than the error fails to displace it.
4 · Technological bottlenecks
Established The binding constraint on this subject is document access, and it is unusually tractable. Every open question above is answerable from paper that exists or is known not to exist. That is a different situation from most briefs on this map, where the constraint is a measurement nobody can make.
Established Corporate research archives from the 1950s are the largest hole. The named firms — Convair, Bell, Lear, Sperry-Rand, Glenn L. Martin, General Electric, Sikorsky, Douglas, Hiller — have mostly been merged, absorbed or dissolved several times over, and the internal research records of a defunct division are the first thing a merger loses. Frontier A negative result from those archives would be weak evidence in any single case and strong evidence across nine, and nobody has run the sweep.
Frontier The trade press is the least digitised layer of the twentieth-century record. Interavia, aviation newsletters and subscriber intelligence reports sit outside the newspaper digitisation programmes and outside the academic databases, which is precisely why a citation to one of them is so hard to check and so easy to propagate. Speculative The general lesson is worth stating: the durability of a claim in circulation correlates with the inaccessibility of its founding citation.
Established The citation chain itself is the second bottleneck, and it is self-reinforcing. Each author in the modern chain cites the previous author rather than the primary document. Valone reprints the 1956 reports; Cook cites the reprint and undocumented secondary researchers; downstream works cite Cook. Established A chain of this shape cannot correct itself, because no link in it ever touches the object being described.
Frontier Third, the primary-source asymmetry runs the wrong way for the correction. The suppression account rests on two documents that are freely available as a cheap reprint. The mainstream account rests on archival correspondence at Chapel Hill and MIT, reconstructed in a journal article behind an academic paywall. Speculative The false story is easier to read than the true one, and that is a structural fact about the literature rather than a claim about anyone’s motives.
Established Fourth, there is no scholarly monograph on the trade-press episode itself. Kaiser and Rickles cover the patronage and the physics community; the reprint covers the reports; the debunking literature covers the modern books. Nobody has written the history of Aviation Studies (International) Limited and how a subscriber intelligence service came to publish the founding text of a conspiracy theory.
5 · Research dependencies
Established This brief depends on the physics verdict being settled elsewhere, and it is. Electrogravitics owns the finding that the Biefeld–Brown effect is ion wind and dies in vacuum; Gravity Modification owns the general absence of any electric–gravity coupling; Reactionless Propulsion owns the adjacent null results. Without those, this brief would be adjudicating a live physics question in a history section, which is exactly the error the 1956 report made.
Established It depends most heavily on one peer-reviewed history-of-science paper. Kaiser and Rickles supply the donor names, the dollar figures, the dates, the Wheeler and Trimble correspondence and the Oppenheimer letter. Frontier That is a single-source dependency on the load-bearing section, mitigated by the open-access edition of the GR1 proceedings, which corroborates the conference chronology independently. Speculative A second independent archival treatment of the Bahnson patronage does not exist as far as this pass could establish, and its absence should be read as a limit on how firmly the section can be stated.
Established It depends on the two published null results for the funding argument, not for the physics. Talley and the NASA replication matter here because they are government tests that were published — the shape of the evidence, not its content, is what the suppression thesis has to explain.
Frontier It depends on the biographical chronology of Thomas Townsend Brown, which currently rests on an encyclopaedia entry. The two facts doing the most work — the 1942 discharge in lieu of court martial, and the 1958 Bahnson employment — both deserve a primary document before they are treated as beyond dispute. Neither is contested by anyone, which is not the same as either being verified.
Frontier And it depends on scholarship it does not itself supply: the science-communication literature on why corrections fail. The five-step mechanism in section 14 is a reconstruction from this one episode. Whether it generalises is an empirical question for a field this brief borrows from rather than contributes to.
6 · Required experiments
Established The experiments this subject needs are archival retrievals, and each one has a defined stopping condition. That is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: for once, a list of required experiments can be completed by people with library cards.
Established One: pull the New York Herald-Tribune for 20–22 November 1955 and for 20–22 November 1956. Outcome: the Talbert series date is settled, or the series is found not to run on either set of dates, which would be more interesting still. Cost: an afternoon with a microfilm reader.
Established Two: request Interavia vol. 11 no. 5 (1956), pp. 373–374 through interlibrary loan. Outcome: the article is produced, in which case a seventy-year-old citation is finally verified; or it is not, in which case the founding citation of the suppression literature is formally recorded as untraceable. Established Both outcomes are publishable and the second is the more valuable.
Frontier Three: read the Bahnson papers. Specifically, the 1958 material covering the Whitehall Rand project and the Institute of Field Physics in the same year. Outcome: a direct account of how one patron understood two programmes that later historiography treats as opposites.
Frontier Four: check the Mansfield Amendment claim against the statute and the Wright-Patterson research funding record. Goldberg’s own published account of Air Force support for general relativity is the likely route. Outcome: either a public statutory mechanism for the end of the funding line, or the removal of the last specific claim about how it ended.
Frontier Five: a nine-firm archival sweep for any 1950s gravity-related project record. This is the expensive one and the one that would actually settle the company list. Speculative A predicted outcome is worth writing down in advance so it can be wrong: small exploratory files at one or two firms, no budget lines, no project numbers, nothing resembling the report’s “extensively committed.”
Established What does not need doing is another physics experiment. The device has been tested in vacuum by an Air Force contractor and by NASA, and both published. Handwave A proposal to re-test it as though the question were open is a proposal to re-run a settled measurement, and the reason it keeps being proposed is that the historical claim and the physical claim have been allowed to share a name.
7 · Engineering requirements
Established The engineering content of this brief is the test apparatus that answered the question, because the specification of that apparatus is what the fringe account cannot accommodate. An asymmetric capacitor in air produces thrust; the whole question is whether it still does with the air taken away.
Established The discriminating variable is chamber pressure, and the threshold is published. NASA’s replication found that “no device showed signs of rotation at a pressure less than 300 Torr.” That is a soft vacuum — roughly 40% of an atmosphere — and it is already enough to extinguish the effect. Established Talley’s Air Force work went to high vacuum and found “no detectable propulsive force… electrostatically induced.” Two independent rigs, two decades apart, agreeing on the sign of the result.
Established The engineering that a 1950s demonstration actually required was high-voltage supply and dielectric handling, not gravitational instrumentation. Brown’s rigs were tens of kilovolts across asymmetric electrodes, with the visible effect being motion of an object suspended in air. Frontier A device of that description is a straightforward electrohydrodynamic demonstrator, and it is genuinely impressive to watch, which is a large part of why the episode happened at all.
Established The real engineering descendant of this work is atmospheric and is not gravity. Solid-state electroaerodynamic propulsion is a live field with a flown aircraft behind it; Electrogravitics and Electrodynamic Propulsion Concepts own it. Frontier The historically interesting point is that the mundane reading of Brown’s effect turned out to have a real engineering future, and the exotic reading did not.
Frontier The archival engineering problem is digitisation and provenance. The reason this episode is hard to check is that the relevant layer of the record — subscriber trade intelligence, corporate research files, aviation newsletters — sits outside every mass digitisation programme built so far. Speculative A modest, unglamorous engineering intervention — systematic scanning and OCR of mid-century aviation trade press with stable identifiers — would do more to settle claims of this class than any instrument.
8 · Adjacent technologies
Established The seam with Electrogravitics is the sharpest one on this brief and it is drawn on subject, not on strength of claim. FR-I-21 owns the physics verdict entirely: no electric–gravity coupling, the Biefeld–Brown effect as ion wind, the vacuum behaviour, and the MIT 2018 solid-state flight. Handwave “The B-2 or some other aircraft uses electrogravitic propulsion.” This belongs to Electrogravitics, which disposes of it on the physics.
