1 · Concept overview

Reactionless propulsion means generating thrust without expelling propellant and without an equal-and-opposite reaction — a drive that accelerates a ship by pushing on nothing external. It must be distinguished from legitimate propellantless propulsion (solar sails, tethers, photon and beam-powered drives), which carry no onboard fuel but do push against light, fields, or beamed momentum.

2 · Current scientific position

Handwave A truly reactionless drive violates conservation of momentum — one of the most stringently tested laws in physics, tied by Noether's theorem to the uniformity of space itself. Known physics does not permit it.

Handwave The EmDrive (a tapered microwave cavity claimed to produce thrust) is the famous test case. NASA's Eagleworks reported a tiny signal in 2016, but the definitive TU Dresden SpaceDrive tests (Tajmar, 2021) refuted all EmDrive claims by at least three orders of magnitude, attributing the earlier signals to thermal expansion of the mount and to unshielded cables interacting with Earth's magnetic field.

Speculative The Mach-Effect Thruster (Woodward) is subtler: it invokes Mach's principle and transient mass fluctuations, and claims momentum is conserved by exchange with distant matter. The same Dresden tests found its apparent thrust to be a vibration artifact, though proponents dispute the shielding and power levels. It is the one residual thread — and the cleanest test to date found nothing real.

3 · Frontier questions

Speculative Is there any overlooked momentum reservoir — the quantum vacuum, or Mach-principle coupling to distant matter — that a device could genuinely push against? Decades of increasingly careful experiments have turned up no credible evidence, but the Mach-effect question is not formally closed.

4 · Technological bottlenecks

Handwave The bottleneck is a law, not a technology: conservation of momentum. Every claimed effect that has been tested carefully has resolved into a measurement artifact (thermal, magnetic, or vibrational).

5 · Research dependencies

Handwave A working reactionless drive would depend on physics beyond both the Standard Model and general relativity — new physics for which there is currently no evidence.

6 · Required experiments

Established The genuinely valuable experimental work is the null test: ultra-high-precision thrust balances in vacuum, with rigorous magnetic shielding and thermal control, exactly as TU Dresden built. This is how extraordinary propulsion claims get cleanly resolved — and so far, resolved to zero.

7 · Engineering requirements

Handwave There are no engineering requirements to state, because no verified effect exists to engineer. Effort is better spent hardening measurements than designing devices.

8 · Adjacent technologies

Established The real, momentum-carrying propellantless technologies are the productive neighbours: solar and laser sails, ion and electric propulsion, electrodynamic tethers, photon rockets, and beam-powered propulsion. All work, all obey conservation of momentum, and all belong to later Category I topics on the map.

9 · Institutional requirements

Reactionless propulsion is a perennial magnet for pseudoscience and investment fraud. The institution that matters is the rigorous null-testing laboratory (TU Dresden's SpaceDrive is the exemplar): the ability to cleanly disprove a claim is itself the valuable capability.

10 · Ethical & societal considerations

The ethical hazard is epistemic and financial: extraordinary claims attract funding and hope out of proportion to evidence. Honest, well-flagged assessment protects both.

11 · Civilizational implications

Handwave If a reactionless drive were real, spaceflight would be transformed overnight — but there is no basis for it. Established Meanwhile the real propellantless technologies already enable cheap, long-duration deep-space cruise, and improving them is where the civilizational payoff actually lies.

12 · Timelines

  • 10 / 25 / 50 yr: Handwave no reactionless drive expected on any horizon — it would require overturning conservation of momentum.
  • Meanwhile: Established real propellantless propulsion (sails, ion, tethers, beamed power) is here now and steadily improving.
  • 100 / 250+ yr: Handwave still contingent on new physics for which there is currently no evidence.

14 · Common misconceptions & speculative claims

Handwave NASA did not confirm the EmDrive — the 2016 signal was a measurement artifact, refuted in 2021. Established “Reactionless” is not the same as “propellantless”: a photon drive carries momentum away as light, so it is not reactionless. Handwave “Pushing on the quantum vacuum” has no accepted theoretical basis. The honest takeaway: momentum conservation has never lost.
